The planned Hospice Residence to be constructed by the Mercy Regional Medical Center has been approved as an Enterprise Zone Contribution Project by the Colorado Economic Development Commission (EDC). This designation, approved July 25th allows all donor contributions of $250 or more for this project eligible for a 25% state tax credit on cash donations, and a 12.5% state tax credit on in-kind donations.
Fundraising is underway for the Hospice of Mercy residence, a welcoming 11,000-square-foot residential facility with 12 beds. It will be for people who canít be cared for at home but donít want to die in the hospital. Itís particularly good to allow hospice to handle the physical care of the patient so the family and friends can just spend time together.
In fiscal year 2012, Hospice of Mercy served 514 patients in La Plata and Archuleta counties, for a total of 5,720 visits. Staff members, nurses and volunteers covered almost 69,000 miles delivering compassionate care to patients and their families.
In 1986, the Colorado State Legislature approved the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit program to assist economically distressed areas of the state. In Southwest Colorado, all of Montezuma, Archuleta, San Juan, and Dolores Counties are designated enterprise zone areas. La Plata County has some areas that are not considered distressed, and thus not included.
