SCAPE's First Round of Graduates

December 06, 2013

Durango, CO – The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center, along with partners, Region 9 Economic Development District and the LaPlata Economic Development Alliance announce the completion of the first Graduation and Pitch Night for SCAPE, the new Accelerator program. SCAPE, The Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs event was held on Monday, November 4, at the Durango Arts Center.

SCAPE was founded by experienced entrepreneurs and businessmen, Jim Mackay and Gary Masner. The business incubator, is designed to help support the creation and growth of high growth job creating companies in the Four Corners Region.

The graduates presented details of their business plans and made their pitches for funding to a group of about 40 potential investors and business officials.

Ilan Paltrow, presented his start-up company, and Tristan Rubadeau outlined his plans for ReBill, recurring business software. Both completed a four month program doing research, compiling data and refining their initial business propositions. Sessions included meetings and brainstorming sessions with experienced mentors and experts in business start-ups.

Paltrow explains, “It was like MBA Bootcamp. In four months we learned a ton.” The biggest benefit he gained from the experience was how to look at the assumptions he had made about running his business and then having the opportunity to “test them as quickly and inexpensively as possible. Having a team to work with was extremely beneficial. It was great having experienced mentors share their knowledge and experience with us.”

Rubadeau concurs. “My idea got expanded and pivoted from the initial assumptions. I adjusted my target market by opening it up beyond my initial niche. The brainstorming sessions with the mentors uncovered the best way to use technology to make my product most attractive and appeal to a larger market.”

SCAPE is now accepting applications for the next session. For more information contact, Jim Mackay,
